The Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital Redevelopment Stages 2 and 3

The Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital Redevelopment Project will be conducted in multiple stages over 4 years. Allstaff were successful in securing 2 stages of this large project with Stage 3 having commenced construction in late 2016.

The project comprises of a refurbishment and new build components on the Victoria Parade, East Melbourne site. Clinical facilities being delivered as part of this scope include:

  • 7 operating theatres and 14 recovery spaces
  • 37 beds/chairs for same-day and ambulatory clinical services
  • 15 overnight stay inpatient beds
  • 13 cubicle Emergency Department
  • 42 outpatient consulting rooms and specialist clinics for Audiology, Orthoptics, Speech, Cochlear, Eye, Physiotherapy and Diabetes
  • New CSSD, Pharmacy and Electronic medical records
  • New Teaching, Training and Research facilities including Biomedical Research Centre and PC2 laboratories.

Stage 2 Enabling Works: commenced in November 2013 and included early demolition, temporary loading dock and stores in Aubrey Bowen Wing (ABW), new teaching, training and research (TTR) floors in the Peter Howson Wing (PHW), new Emergency Department in Smorgon Family Wing (SFW) and major services infrastructure upgrades.

Stage 3 Main Works: commenced in late 2016 and is a multi-staged refurbishment of existing buildings from lower ground to the third (or fourth) floor to create new hospital accommodation. The Main Works comprise:

  • Demolition of the existing Central Link buildings
  • Construction of the new Infill building (approx. 6,000 sqm total floor space) from lower ground to Level 6 (roof) between the existing towers
  • Fit-out of the new infill building and refurbishment of the first to third floors of the Peter Howson Wing and second floor of the Smorgon Family Wing
  • Refurbishment of co-located areas from lower ground floor to Level 3
  • A multi-staged refurbishment of the existing buildings from lower ground to the third (or fourth floor) to create new hospital accommodation, and
  • Construction of new hospital entry on Gisborne Street.
